Sciatica
Pain in the buttock or down the leg, unusual sensations tingling, numbness, pins and needles, weakness with difficulty in moving or controlling the leg, all symptoms of sciatica.
You may find your symptoms vary depending on what you’re doing at the time. Like a telephone exchange, each part of the sciatic nerve gives a different distribution of pain to discrete areas of the leg.
What is this condition?
Sciatica is usually felt in one leg at a time, ranging from a dull ache to an incapacitating pain that prevents sleep and can require large doses of painkillers to get relief. Sciatic pain does not always accompany back pain. The quality and site of sensation can vary dependent on the position/severity of the imprint on the sciatic nerve.
Is this service right for me?
Quite literally a pain in the butt, the leg and even the foot. The deep nagging pain can radiate from your lower back, through your hip and butt, down the side of your leg, numbing your foot. It can even trip you up by “flopping” your foot.
How is it treated?
Acuhealth can help injuries to heal a faster because acupuncture has been shown to increase the anti-inflammatory response and increase blood flow.
Following a thorough assessment, treatment is a combination of muscle release, mobilisation, acupuncture and specific exercise. Recovery may take time as we build strength and flexibility. The risk of recurrence is very high. Consequently, advice on ongoing care is essential.
Acuhealth relieves pain in a similar way to opioid painkillers, but without any adverse side effects. Treatments reduce inflammation and promote circulation to the injury to speed up healing.
We begin by assessing the possible causes originating from activity, posture and muscle tightness to develop a treatment plan tailored to you. Both a combination of acupuncture and deep tissue work to tight muscles often helps.
