Heartburn - GERD

Most people will experience acid reflux occasionally, especially after a large meal or alcohol.  If your heartburn occurs two or more times per week, it may indicate chronic heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

What is this condition?

Heartburn is caused when food or liquid in the stomach backs up into the oesophagus (the tube connecting the throat to the stomach). This acid reflux occurs when the valve separating the oesophagus and the stomach opens at an inappropriate time. This condition can be exasperated by an hiatal hernia which can force the valves to stay open

How is it treated?

At Acuhealth we develop our protocols from evidence based studies that show acupuncture improves gastrointestinal motility and inhibits acid secretion in the stomach. Additionally, adding acupuncture to proton-pump inhibitor drugs has been shown to more effective in managing symptoms than doubling the dosage of the proton-pump inhibitor.
